Starting a business as a neurodivergent entrepreneur can be empowering — but creating a website may feel overwhelming. You might find it hard to filter through options or make decisions quickly. That’s okay. A step-by-step approach can help you stay grounded and make the process manageable.

Choosing the Right Domain Name

Your domain name is your business’s online identity. It’s often the first impression people get of your brand, so it’s worth taking time to choose the right one. A good domain name should be:

  • Simple – Easy to type and pronounce, avoiding complex spellings or punctuation.

  • Memorable – Something people won’t forget after hearing it once.

  • Relevant – Closely aligned with your brand name, services, or industry.

Most importantly, make sure it’s unique. Try to avoid names that are too similar to well-known brands or existing websites, as this can lead to confusion and people landing on someone else’s page. If your chosen name is already taken in .com or .co.uk versions, it may be worth tweaking it to stand out more clearly.

You can experiment with adding words that reinforce your niche, such as "coaching", "designs", "consults", or your location (e.g. "TypicallyDiverseLondon.co.uk").

Transferring Your Domain to a Host

Once your domain is purchased, you can link it to your website host. Every platform has simple steps or help guides to do this:

  • Wix: Go to Domain Settings → Connect Domain

  • Squarespace: Use "Settings" → Domains → Connect Existing

  • WordPress: Upgrade to a paid plan → Add Domain → Map existing

If you’re unsure, don't worry — I offer non-retainer based support tailored for small projects or one-off needs. Perfect if you just need a nudge in the right direction.

Build Around Your Brand

Before jumping in and designing your site:

  • Prepare a logo with a transparent background.

  • Create a brand kit: colour hex codes (e.g. #BCC7B4), fonts, and tone of voice.

  • Keep everything in one folder to reduce cognitive load.

This step is especially useful for neurodivergent entrepreneurs because it provides a solid point of reference. Having your colours, fonts, and tone of voice documented in one place removes the need to make repeated design decisions, which can be mentally taxing. It also creates a comforting sense of consistency — both for you and your website visitors.

Your global settings (colours, headers, footers, fonts) can be set once on most platforms, keeping everything consistent. This ensures your site looks cohesive, professional, and aligned with your brand across every page, which helps build trust and recognition.

Start with a One-Pager

If you're not ready to publish a full site, that's okay. Instead, you can create a simple one-page website that features your logo, a short bio, your contact details, and links to your social media. This acts as a placeholder to hold your digital space while you work on building the full site in the background. It also gives you a way to start generating leads and directing people to a professional-looking page immediately, even if your full website isn't finished yet.

Don’t Forget SEO and Google Business

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

Search Engine Optimisation is all about helping people find your website through platforms like Google. By using tools like Ubersuggest or AnswerThePublic, you can identify the exact words and phrases your ideal customers are typing into search engines. Including these keywords naturally in your website content, titles, and descriptions makes it much more likely that your site will show up in relevant searches. This is essential if you want to attract new clients, grow your reach, or compete in your market — especially when you're just starting out and don’t yet have word-of-mouth traffic.

Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile is a free listing that appears in Google Search and Google Maps. It helps your business appear in local searches when people are looking for services in their area. Setting up your profile allows you to add useful information such as your business name, address, hours of operation, and website link. You can also upload photos and updates. This not only boosts visibility but builds credibility, especially for people searching on mobile or looking for nearby solutions. It's a great way to get found even before your website is fully complete
